When we moved into our new home almost eight months ago, I felt slightly overwhelmed with how much space we had to decorate. Even for someone like me that absolutely loves to decorate, starting with a blank slate can be both a blessing and a curse.
We sold a decent amount of our furniture in Seattle, and aside from our mattress, a couch and my favorite bar car, we were essentially starting from scratch on the decorating front. We definitely still have more to do and it isn’t final (what woman feels like her home is!?), but sharing a couple tips that helped me chunk it up and truly enjoy the process. Plus, my favorite home decor shops that I absolutely couldn’t live without!
- Decide on an overall theme and color scheme for your house. While every room doesn’t have to be the same and in fact, it shouldn’t be, I wanted our house to be neutral so as our style changes and evolves over the years, I can swap in new colors and pieces easily without having to change everything. For me, that meant lots of neutrals, grays, tans, off-white with subtle hints of blue throughout the house. Those showed up in throw blankets, accent chairs, pillows and potentially even an accent wall…although I can’t commit!
- Pick one room at a time to decorate instead of doing it all. We have always spent a ton of time in our kitchen and living room, so this was my number one priority. And truthfully, a couch can absolutely change the entire vibe of the main room. From there, the “vibe” of our home kinda just came together. The dining room table, TV stand, etc. just followed. Then, I wanted to get furniture in my office being that it’s the first room you see when you walk into our house, it was important to me that it be really beautiful. Next, our master. Ben always laughs at me because I seriously love our bedroom and could stay in bed happily all day — it is just my ultimate happy place! It’s so peacful and with so much white and nautral lighting, it’s literally my favorite spot to wake up slowly on a Sunday morning, get some computer work done late at night, or any other “excuse” I can find to stay there.
- Shop around. Find a piece, love it, think about it, then wait to pull the trigger. I am be so impulsive when it comes to shopping. Hello, patience. My name is Ashley and apparently we’ve never met. But truthfully, it is SO worth it to wait. There are times to splurge on the gorgeous piece you just can’t find anywhere else, but unless it’s on super clearance, it will be there tomorrow and the next day and the day after that.
- Trust your favorites. I’ve talked about this before, but Living Spaces, Home Goods, CB2 and Target are my go-tos when it comes to decorating our home with comfortable, affordable, practical and beautiful pieces. Each one offers something different and unique, but all together make the perfect combination.
