We recently celebrated our blog birthday, marking our first year of managing Simply, Darling Duo. We thought this was the perfect opportunity to sit down, reflect on the last year, and document all that we’ve learned. It’s been a whirlwind of a year, flying by with so many exciting opportunities and milestones. We realized that we had learned so much, and had such an amazing time doing it, that we wanted to share our list with all of you.
- Just go for it, you’ll never know until you try.
These have been guiding words for us from the start. We’ve found that the best way to learn and grow is to put yourself out there, and figure it out as you go. There isn’t a right or wrong way to create content, so know it’s ok to evolve, and to figure out what works through trial and error.
- Recognize when you need a break… and give yourself one.
Your schedule is going to occasionally become completely full, leaving you feeling like you can barely keep up. Recognize when it’s becoming too much to handle, and give yourself permission to say “no” to give yourself the break you need.
- Take risks.
Stepping outside of your creative comfort zone almost always pays off. The worst thing that can happen is that you find out what doesn’t work, adapt, and continue on.
- Best friend over everything.
When we started this blog we were best friends, and we have a pact to always prioritize that. At the end of the day, maintaining that friendship is more important than anything else.
- Fake it until you make it.
Especially when beginning a project in a brand new space, you aren’t going to have all of the answers. However, oftentimes putting on a brave face and working with confidence will quickly lead you down the path of figuring it out and becoming more confident and sure of your decisions.
- Know when to ask for help.
On the other hand, sometimes you are just going to need help. Whether you’re completely lost in learning a new tool, or feeling spread thin, know it’s ok to ask for help, and who you can rely on to provide it. One of the (many) perks of working on our blog as a team, is that when one of us has a rough week, we each know the other is there to help pick up the slack and keep things moving.
- Consistency is key.
This was huge for us. One reason to maintain consistency in producing content is that it will set an expectation for your readers, making them more likely to return to your site and continue to follow along. If they know they can visit every week and find 3 new pieces of content, they will. But secondly, it helped us to quickly grow in our content-creation skills, and adapt to a specific timeline.
- Practice makes perfect.
Any time you begin something new, your first few attempts are not going to be your best. But as long as you don’t give up at this point, you will continue to improve with time and energy spent practicing this new skill.
- Rely on your community.
When we first started this blog, we weren’t plugged into the Seattle fashion or creative community at all. We followed a few bloggers, but didn’t know how strong the community of women and men were that shared our mutual love for blogging. Regardless of where you are, chances are there’s a strong community already formed. Go to events, reach out for coffee, ask questions and know you aren’t in it alone.
- Most importantly, be true to who you are through and through.
Like anyone else, we are motivated and inspired by so many other incredible men and women — both people we know and people we follow on social. But, we’ve always believed that in order to be your most successful self, you’ve got to be true to who you are and what makes you unique. That’s why people are going to follow you!
Thank you all so much for following along this last year! We love you all and are so excited to continue on with Simply, Darling Duo.
