I was paroozing some of my favorite blogs the other day, and then jumped over to lifestyle outlets for inspiration while listening to “How I Built This” (side note: listen to Barre3 with Sadie Lincoln – it’s so good!) and had the TV on in the background watching the Olympics. All the sudden, it hit me. Despite me reading, listening to and watching so many different things, I still didn’t feel like it was enough and had a laundry list of articles to read, podcasts to listen to, magazines to flip through and so on.
Like many of you, I feel pressure to constantly be connected and to never miss a beat. There are so many different ways to consume information and so many different pieces of content coming at us every day. There’s always another blog to read, podcast to listen to, trendy show to watch and yet it still feels like you aren’t always fully caught up. It reminded me to slow down, be picky and choose your time wisely.
We have 24 hours in the day. You have to sleep, eat, commute, workout, spend time with family and friends, read, and still find the time to take care of yourself. Plus, all the other things we want to do throughout the day to stay motivated and focused. I want to remind you to choose your time wisely. Really prioritize and be mindful of what you’re reading and how you’re spending your time because we only have so much of it. Here are the three ways I think about whether to consume content:
- Will this information help me learn or benefit me in some way? Like so many of you, I am constantly trying to learn and grow. I will always try to prioritize podcasts, books and articles that teach me something new and push me closer to my goals.
- Do I enjoy this? Ok, in college especially, I used to get made fun of for constantly reading US Weekly. I just love looking at the beautiful clothing and reading the trashy celebrity gossip articles! Can you blame me? I don’t still read celebrity sites daily, but do really love reading lifestyle blogs, watching trashy TV (guilty KUWTK fan over here) and looking at Daily Mail’s snapchat every morning.
- Will this inspire me? I am always looking for news ways to be inspired, and it definitely changes depending on the season of my life. Right now, I am really inspired by wellness trends, workouts and home decor. I love reading magazines, blogs and books that will inspire me to live my best life.
How do you stay balanced and selective with your time?
